Biocides: What are they? Classification of Biocides

28 April, 2021Clean Biotec

Biocides are substances containing one or more active substances or preparations intended to exterminate, control or eliminate pathogenic or disrupting microorganisms for humans, animals and plants. Therefore, the scope is very broad, from the entire primary sector to the tertiary sector. In Europe they are regulated by Regulation 528/2012. The list of approved active substances can be found at the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).
There are four large groups of Biocides:
Group 1: Disinfectants
Group 2: Preservatives
Group 3: Pesticides
Group 4: Other biocides
Disinfectants include all biocidal products used in human hygiene, veterinary hygiene, food, feed and water.
While preservatives, unless otherwise indicated, collect those intended to prevent the growth of microorganisms and algae. They protect products of various kinds (food, skins, fabrics, polymers,…) during their manufacture, packaging, storage and transport.
As for pesticides, any product is included to control arthropods, rodents, birds, worms, other invertebrates; Also included are repellents and attractants, and control of other vertebrates.
The fourth group of biocides includes anti-fouling products, embalming liquids and taxidermy.
For a product to be considered biocidal, it must go through tests showing its effectiveness. Clean-Biotec carries out on-demand studies of biocidal products against specific microorganisms depending on the application to be given to that product.
