Biocidal effect of Hypochlorous Acid

26 October, 2020Clean Biotec

An ideal disinfectant and hygienizer should be non-toxic for surface contact, non-corrosive, effective in various forms and relatively inexpensive. Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) is an endogenous substance in all mammals and is effective against a wide range of microorganisms. Various blood cells responsible for the body’s defenses (neutrophils, eosinophils, macrophages and B lymphocytes) produce HOCl in response to injury and infection through the mitochondrial membrane-linked enzyme known as respiratory nicotinamide phosphate phosphate oxidase.” (1)

HOCl is a powerful oxidizing agent. In aqueous solution, it dissociates into H+ and OCl-, denaturing and adding proteins. HOCl also destroys chlorination viruses by forming nitrogen-centric chloramines and radicals, resulting in single- and two-chain DNA ruptures, making nucleic acid useless and the virus harmless

Recently Clean-Biotec has conducted a trial with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and SAR-CoV-2 virus plasmid to check the bactericidal and virucidal effect, respectively, and ratify the data found in the literature.

The trial was conducted in Logroño at the Pedro Barrio Dental Clinic (www.clinicadentalpedrobarrio.com)

where they use hypochlorous acid to disinfect patient-patient consultations. The way hocl is obtained is by electrolysis of Sodium Chloride in aqueous dissolution; the HOCl solution is applied by a nebulizer and allowed to operate for 10 minutes. In our trial, three open petri plates of 25 cm2 surface were placed on which 100 uL were inoculated with 107 CFUs/mL (Colony Forming Units /mL) of the bacteria and another 3 plates with 100 uL with 105 copies/mL of the plasmid of the virus that causes Covid 19.

In both cases the results were spectacular, the reduction of the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa was 6 logarithmic units, more than a million times, in percentage terms 99.9998% while the reduction of viral plasmid was total, corroborating the results of other scientists and, therefore, highlighting the virucida effect of this simple molecule.
